Skin Care For Men

Dr. W. Y. Chung, MD - Monday, August 04, 2014

Dee Anna Glaser, MD, professor of dermatology at Saint Louis University, says, “Men’s facial skin is typically thicker than women’s and less likely to be sensitive to ingredients in facial cleansers and moisturizers.” Skin care is also usually a simpler routine since men typically don’t wear makeup.

Shaving is an issue.  Irritation and bumps from razors can cause a big problem for men with curly or heavy beards. Proper care can assure that these problems can be avoided.

Bar Soap or Liquid Cleansers for Men

In comparing the usage of bar soap to liquid soap, most men prefer bar soap.  This tends to dry the skin, much more so than liquid soap.  If you do use bar soap, use one that have a moisturizing element in it.  Vitamin E oil, Jojoba oil and glycerin help to moisturize the skin.

If you have an acne issue, which is caused by oil, a cleanser containing glycolic acid, salicylic acid and benzyl peroxide can help clean out pores clogged with oil.

Moisturizers

If you have dry skin, use a moisturizer after washing.  For very dry skin, use a cream; and for normal skin, use a lotion. If you have oily skin, use a toner or gel product.

Sunscreen

Use a daily moisturizer containing sunscreen in it every day.   Also apply to your scalp in those hair-thinning areas.  Spray sunscreens are ideal for the head.  Many hair gels contain sunscreen.   Always use a sun screen level of at least SPF -30.  The best option is to wear a hat when you are planning sun exposure.

Shaving

If your skin gets a rash, razor burn or bumps, you should use a shaving cream containing aloe.  It’s also good to lather up for a short time before you shave.  This will soften your facial hairs.

Shaving creams and products containing glycolic acid will unclog pores, and reduce razor bumps.  Refrain from fragrance laden products to reduce skin irritation.

The more blades on your razor, the more likely you will irritate your skin.  Choose an electric razor, or blades with a single or double edge to reduce this irritation.

When shaving, try shaving in the direction the hair grows, and not against the growth pattern.  This should help reduce irritation.  Use an aftershave product to soothe the skin.

If your problems continue, Laser Beard Hair Reduction can be discussed with your physician.

Aftershave Lotions

It is always good to use an astringent after shaving.  This will tighten skin and decrease pore size.

Witch Hazel is great for this, and helps reduce puffiness and irritation. Grooming Mustaches and Beards.
