Next generation dermal fillers is now available in Hawaii. It received FDA approval in October, 2013. Granted, it took awhile coming to the U.S. market, having been introduced in Europe in 2005. But, it’s here now and it’s revolutionary. Voluma XC was developed by Juvederm, a market leader in cosmetic dermal fillers. Voluma XC has been approved for adding volume to the cheek area. The mid-face area loses fat as we age, making our faces sag. This dermal filler can plump and lift cheeks, temporarily restoring the padding we have lost.
In the past, dermal fillers have been approved to fill the nasolabial lines bracketing the mouth. Those are the lines which run from the nose to the corners of the lips. The gel is used to fill in deep to moderate wrinkles or folds around the mouth and on the forehead. The gel helps to plump up and soften those indentations to give the face a more youthful appearance. The Voluma XC filler rejuvenates the face using a different approach.
When we are young the fat is distributed evenly and smoothly, padding our cheeks and forehead and giving our face its youthful contours. Unfortunately, as we age this fat padding begins to shift and decrease in volume. Redistribution of the fat causes our skin to sag. Voluma XC adds padding and volume to those sagging areas.
This filler can be used to improve the contour of all aspects of the cheek area. The apex, apple, and hollow of the cheek can all be improved, lifted, and plumped with this dermal filler. Because our cheeks flatten as we age, adding dimension to the face improves our profile.
Voluma XC by Juvederm is a filler with a gel consistency made from hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body. It has been used for years in topical creams. It is a highly effective ingredient used in moisturizers and serums, which pulls moisture from the environment. Because hyaluronic acid naturally occurs in the body an allergic reaction is rare. Before hyaluronic acid fillers were developed collagen, silicone, and fat were used to plump up the skin. Some of these products are known to cause allergies. Because collagen is derived from an animal source, it is fairly routine to be tested for a collagen allergy. Because of the rarity of an allergic reaction to hyaluronic acid an allergy test is not required before cosmetic treatment.
Hyaluronic acid is actually a complex sugar which absorbs water like a sponge. It can absorb many times its own weight in water, and this increase in volume makes it the optimal substance to help lift and plump the cheek area. It is a colorless, smooth gel which won’t clump, making it the superior dermal filler.
The results are immediate, years are shaved off in a matter of minutes. In the YouTube video below, Dr. W.Y. Chung director of our Hawaii Vein Center, demonstrates how quickly this new filler can transform a person’s appearance.
A tiny incision is made in the cheek for the insertion of a cannula. The gel is injected under the skin using the cannula, which is a micro-thin tube. Through this single opening in the skin the cannula can be maneuvered easily, depositing the gel evenly along the cheekbone. In addition, once the filler has been inserted it can be manipulated and molded for optimal distribution. Once satisfactory placement has been achieved the gel stays put.
Another quality which makes this particular dermal filler truly unique is its lasting power. All dermal fillers made from hyaluronic acid will eventually be absorbed by the body. Some of the gels used for the nasolabial region only last for six months or so. The Voluma XC filler can last for as long as two years.
Nasolabial folds are visible from infancy on and they deepen as we grow older. When administered properly a dermal filler can lessen deep lines and give your face a smoother look. But filling in these folds can be overdone. If too much filler is used the lines are nearly erased, making the face look unnatural. On the other hand, plumping the cheeks with a dermal filler is basically placing padding where it once existed before. The effect is subtle yet rejuvenating. There is an added benefit to the use of hyaluronic acid, injecting it can help stimulate collagen production.
As with all cosmetic procedures, the skill of the doctor will determine the success of the treatment. Topical numbing creams may be applied. Voluma XC contains a small amount of lidocaine to insure a nearly pain-free experience. Obviously, use of this filler is contraindicated for a patient who is allergic to lidocaine. You may experience a few mild to moderate side-effects such as, tenderness, a slight reddening of the skin, and some swelling. These side-effects should subside in two to four weeks. The safety of hyaluronic acid as a dermal filler has been proven over the years. And, though, the product is new to the U.S. it has been used for years in Europe.
The amount of filler required to get optimal results will depend on the individual. Older patients will usually require more filler than younger patients to achieve the best results.
There is barely any downtime, patients can resume their normal activities if they choose. Some patients, though, prefer waiting until twenty four hours have passed before resuming their day-to-day activities, especially if strenuous exercise is involved.
